Hearing her Grandmother croon background vocals for iconic soul singer Aretha Franklin music has always been a heavy influence in Teairra Mari’s growth as a performer. A singer, songwriter, and actress with a promising future Teairra Mari rains from the “motor city” Detroit, Michigan, she has been singing and entertaining since the tender age of 12.
Teairra released her first album in 2003 though Def Jam Records entitled” Get Away” at the age of 16. The album was a notable success, leading to an introduction with American Grammy Award-winning R&B songwriter, musician and record producer Daryl Simmons (Toni Braxton/Babyface/Mariah Carey). Teairra’s sophomore album, “Roc-A-Fella Presents: Teairra Mari,” was released in 2005, and received critical acclaim for the song “Make Her Feel Good.” The album reached the #5 position on the Billboard 200 albums chart and #2 on the Billboard R&B charts. It was at this point that her true road to stardom began. In 2008, she released At That Point, which featured producers such as Rico Love, The Runners, The Underdogs and more. Nicki Minaj, Flo Rida, Pleasure P, Soulja Boy, Gucci Mane, Kanye West & Rick Ross all appeared on the album to lend a vocal ques.
Between 2009-2010, Teairra Marí released a host of mix-tapes such as Don't Make Me Cause A Scene (hosted by DJ Papa Smurf) Point of No Return and The Night Before X-Mas (hosted by DJ Drama). She then released Sincerely Yours, a digital EP released via iTunes, which featured the hit single "Sponsor", and other hits like "Body", and "Stranger".
In March 2011,Teairra began working with Rico Love, under the imprint of Division1. Teairra released a fourth mix-tape titled Now or Never. Teairra Mari says about Rico Love “It’s absolutely amazing the chemistry that Rico and I share. I couldn’t ask for another partner in crime.” In July 2011, she released the fifth mix-tape, Unfinished Business.
Like most artists, Teairra proves to be multi talented not only in music but she has blossomed as an actress. She has proven that her acting career is aiming for greatness. In 2010, she starred in the film “Lottery Ticket” as the unattainable love interest of rapper/co-star Bow Wow. In 2012, she filmed the movie “Mac & Devin Take High School” starring Snoop Dogg and Wiz Khalifa. Teairra plays the hot and sexy school teacher, Ms. Huck of which Snoop Dogg has a strong fondness for. Following shortly after, she appeared in the action thriller “Holla II” as Tatiana with famed actress Vanessa Bell Calloway.
Switching from the big screen to the TV screen, Teairra Mari ventured on to reality television appearing in the second season of VH1’s “Love and Hip Hop New York”, which scored a record debut of 4.5 million viewers during its timeslot. In 2013, Teairra premiered on the UP TV network movie called "The Dempsey Sisters” as Sheena Dempsey, the “responsible” middle sister. The movie follows three siblings who decide to put the family band back together when their younger brother falls on hard times. The cast includes Valarie Pettiford, Lynn Whitfield, Clifton Powell, and MC Lyte. She currently appears on the new series of Vh1’s “Love and Hip Hop Hollywood” which showcases her life living in Los Angeles as an R&B singer and actress trying to attain her goals and dreams. Aside from various features and cameos in upcoming film, music and television, Teairra is steadily touring the country and balancing her schedule with new projects slated for 2015.
